One very simple tip that we have for content creators is to keep in mind the maintenance debt that you incur each time new content is created. Whether that is a written article, whitepaper, video, course, etc., you must keep in mind how much time you will need to spend with maintenance.
Consider this example. You are a technical writer that gets several requests from Product, Development, or Support for new articles. These documents will typically explain new features or could even help solve a problem. These types of requests are welcomed and appreciated. However, you must consider the maintenance costs involved. This means you would have to audit this document, typically including the requestor (SME) to review any updates, then republish.
We find that adding a simple step to the upfront process can improve these expectations, especially for the original requestor. I would say something like, "Thanks for the request. I am more than happy to work on this article for you. I can have it done by x date. But also, when do you anticipate this article needing to be updated again?"
Adding this question will help you set proper expectations for maintenance costs/time for yourself, your team, and the SME. What is the ultimate goal of this tip? Customers access up-to-date materials that are relevant to them in their moment of need.
